अविनयमपनय विष्णो दमय मनः शमय विषयमृगतृष्णाम् । भूतदयां विस्तारय तारय संसारसागरतः ॥(avinayamapanaya viṣṇo damaya manaḥ śamaya viṣayamṛgatṛṣṇām । bhūtadayāṃ vistāraya tāraya saṃsārasāgarataḥ ॥—O Viṣṇu! Remove my arrogance, discipline my mind, quieten the restless thirst for sense‑objects. Expand my compassion for all beings, and help me cross the ocean of saṃsāra) अविनयमपनय (avinayamapanaya) — We must remove the tendency to think too highly of ourselves. अविनयमपनय विष्णो (avinayamapanaya viṣṇo) Self‑confidence is necessary, but when it becomes excessive, it leads to problems. अविनयमपनय विष्णो दमय मनः (avinayamapanaya viṣṇo damaya manaḥ) — restrain the mind. शमय विषयमृगतृष्णाम् (śamaya viṣayamṛgatṛṣṇām) — Desire is limitless. It is like a mirage, unreal and unstable. Even here, we can see in photos; in places like Trichy, Vellore, or sometimes even Madras, they publish photographs of mirages during the hot season. Similarly, this mirage‑like desire is called शशविषाण (śaśaviṣāṇa)—the horn of a rabbit, imagining something that does not exist to be real. शमय विषयमृगतृष्णाम् भूतदयां विस्तारय तारय ( śamaya viṣayamṛgatṛṣṇām bhūtadayāṃ vistāraya tāraya)— We should expand the dayā (compassion) we should extend to all living beings. We should begin this from home. We should embrace a family lifestyle rooted in unity, the traditional undivided Hindu family system. Our Dharmā never encourages laziness in action. Therefore, it instructs us to wake up early, take a snānam, perform sandhyāvandanam, go to a temple at least once a week, and perform annadānam at home, and chant अन्नपूर्णे सदापूर्णे शङ्करप्राणवल्लभे । (annapūrṇe sadāpūrṇe śaṅkaraprāṇavallabhe | )ज्ञानवैराग्यसिध्यर्थं भिक्षां देहि च पार्वति || ( jñānavairāgyasidhyarthaṃ bhikṣāṃ dehi ca pārvati ||) (Parvati! Annapurna! Always full with abundant food and blessings, the dear consort of Śaṅkarā, grant us alms of your grace to secure Jñāna (knowledge) and Vairāgya (detachment). While taking a bath, even if you are here in Mylapore, think of Kailāsa and Gaṅgā. Feed the crows; do Go‑saṃrakṣaṇa. Offer agathi keerai or grass to cows. Light a dīpam and chant ślokas in the evening. Clean the entrance with cow dung water, draw kolam, and during Mārgazhi month, sprinkle cow dung water, draw kolam, keep cow dung and place a poosani flower, and recite Mārgazhi thiṅgaḷ maḍhi niraindha nannāḷāl and Muppadum tappāme (all the 30 verses) of Thiruppāvai and Thiruvempāvai. Our Dharmā teaches these practices so that even the poor, the uneducated, and all people may find a path to tṛpti (satisfaction), realize the goal of their birth, and attain sama‑darśana (equal vision). यं यं वापि स्मरन्भावं त्यजत्यन्ते कलेवरम् |तं तमेवैति कौन्तेय सदा तद्भावभावित: || (yaṃ yaṃ vāpi smaranbhāvaṃ tyajtyajatyante kalevaram | taṃ tamevaiti kaunteya sadā tadbhāvabhāvita —Whatever state of mind one remembers at the final moment, O Kaunteya, that alone one attains, being always absorbed in that state.) Therefore, we must always live with that same elevated feeling, so that we may attain that state. When we look into our Purāṇas, we see a sage performing tapas for so long that anthills grew around him. In the Tiruvarur Purāṇa and in many other Purāṇas, we see references to Vālmīkināthar. We should cultivate that tanmayathvam (deep sense of oneness), whether we are awake or asleep, so that the same remembrance remains with us at all times. The Dharmā that has given us upadeśas (spiritual instructions) to attain such bhakti through Ānuṣṭhāna (daily disciplines), Nāma Saṅkīrtana, Pūjā, Homās, Pravacanās, Dhyāna, Yogāsana, Maunam, Sañcāra, Pradakṣiṇā, Parāyaṇam, Pāraṇā, and Upavāsa is the Sanātana Vaidika Hindu Dharmā. How does one attain jñāna? Bhagavān thinks that it is ucitā (suitable) and uttamam (best) for those who truly long for Him. But how does one attain jñāna? Can it come in a single day or in a single installment? When we look into it, we see that it takes many births, as in punarapi jananam (birth again). Across many lifetimes, with a mind that does not wander here and there, as declared in चेतसा नान्यगामिना (cetasā nānyagāminā), with ekāgra cittam (single-pointed concentration), one finally reaches the state described in: बहूनां जन्मनामन्ते ज्ञानवान्मां प्रपद्यते। वासुदेवः सर्वमिति स महात्मा सुदुर्लभः ।। (bahūnāṃ janmanām ante jñānavān māṃ prapadyate vāsudevaḥ sarvam iti sa mahātmā sudurlabhaḥ— After many births, the one endowed with knowledge surrenders to Me, realizing Vāsudeva alone is everything. Such a mahātmā is very rare.) As stated in अभ्यासयोगयुक्तेन चेतसा नान्यगामिना (abhyāsayogayuktena cetasā nānyagāminā), in many janmas, through abhyāsa (practice), āvṛtti (repetition), and japa, as Bhagavān says: yajñānāṃ japa‑yajño’smi (Among sacrifices, I am the sacrifice of japa); and through dhyāna, mauna‑vrata, and the disciplines described in Sādhana‑catuṣṭaya in Viveka Chūḍāmaṇi, such as such as śama, dama, titikṣā (tranquility, self-restraint, and endurance); and cultivating such patience, responsibility, truthfulness, and observing vratas, one attains Ātma‑saṃyama — self‑control, as stated in the Gītā, आत्मसंयमयोगाग्नौ जुह्वति ज्ञानदीपिते || (ātmasaṃyamayogāgnau juhvati jñānadīpite |). It is the special hallmark of India. Mother and father impart this, and they are also teachers in this regard.
